Checking your PHP version

Nowadays a lot of hosts offer both PHP4 and PHP5 on their systems. There is often confusion on what PHP version Joomla is using because of the two PHP versions being offered. Almost always it is a matter of activating PHP5 instead of PHP4. How to do this is host specific so ask your host on how to do this.

Here is how to check what PHP version your system is really using:

  1. Log in to the back end of your Joomla installation
  2. Go to Help and click on System Info
  3. You will now see the basic information of your system

  4. Check your PHP version as circled in red on the screenshot
  5. This is the PHP version your system is using. If this says PHP 4.x then it is time to switch to PHP5.
